What If? — Ecology Series

Thought experiments grounded in ecology, evolution, public health, and uncertainty.

Some organisms are easy to dislike. They bite, parasitize, spread disease, ruin outdoor evenings, or leave us scratching for days. But ecological systems are networks, and even an organism that causes harm may occupy relationships we do not fully see.

The Ornate Intelligence What If? series asks a deliberately simple question: What would happen if a troublesome organism disappeared from Earth? Each paper separates established evidence from projection, distinguishes targeted control from global extinction, and follows the consequences through food webs, host relationships, public health, and evolution.

Series standard

  • Use primary or authoritative sources wherever possible.
  • Separate measured evidence from the speculative “What If?” projection.
  • Distinguish local population control from species eradication and whole-group extinction.
  • State uncertainty directly rather than filling unknowns with assumptions.
  • Evaluate both human benefit and ecological consequence.
  • Write so an expert respects it and a curious non-expert can understand it.

Status: Working research series. Manuscripts may be revised as scientific review and reference verification continue.
